With more time being spent at home this year, a lot of us have been finding ways to stay entertained and start the projects we’ve always wanted to, but can never find the time.

DIY projects are a fun and inclusive way to spend your free time whilst also being a great bonding experience for the whole family. So, carve out some time and spend an afternoon digging into some DIY fun.

Below is a list of DIY projects that are simple enough for the kids to be involved in or to try and tackle a project on their own.

      Vege Garden

Growing your own vegetable garden is a project that can be done with the whole family to increase healthy eating habits whilst also teaching children valuable life lessons in a fun and interesting way. Growing your own fruit and veggies will not only get the children outside, it will create yummier meals and snacks for the whole family to enjoy!

By growing and monitoring your own veggie garden, children will gain satisfaction from watching different vegetables grow in different ways. From changing colours, to growing extra leaves, you will witness the vegetables change daily, eventually turning into a luscious, full blooming garden that can be transferred to the kitchen or snacked on right there and then!

There is truly nothing better than going into the garden to pick your own fresh organic produce and feeling the goodness seep into you while you eat it too!

      At-home Composting

Another way to get in touch with nature and do your bit for the environment is to try at-home composting. Making your own compost has many benefits, it helps to reduce waste and is also one of the best ingredients to add to your soil to retain moisture and kill diseases and pests, ensuring your flowers and vegetables are kept healthy. Making your own compost is the definition of turning trash into treasure, taking your leftovers and rotting fruit and vegetables and transforming them into a rich fertile soil. Depending on what suits your household, you can make either an indoor or outdoor compost bin, both are a great way of educating children on the importance of sustainability and minimising waste.

      Home Terrarium

Plants are a great way to decorate an indoor space and have a popular feature in the modern home. You can never have enough plants in your life and a perfect DIY project that is fun and enjoyable for the entire family is to create a home terrarium. Even if you don’t have the gardening touch, building a terrarium is an easy, low-maintenance activity that is a great way for the kids to embrace their inner gardener. Home terrariums are a great way to incorporate plants indoors and are beautiful addition to desks, dining room tables, bookshelves and little nooks around the home. An enjoyable activity for the kids, creating a terrarium will get their creative juices flowing as children will have the opportunity to personalise them and add an array of plants and cacti of their choice.

      Create a Fairy Garden

Fairy gardens are the ultimate creative DIY project that will certainly bring joy to the kids’ faces. Fun for all ages, making your own fairy garden is a great way to add some quirky magic to your outdoor space. With countless design options, fairy gardens allow you to be as creative as you like. Build a simple garden in a spare container or broken pot, or let your imagination run wild and construct a whole fairy garden village in your backyard. No matter how big or small, Children will enjoy constructing tiny homes for their fairy friends.

      Marble Art

A favourite activity for kids to do  is experimenting with arts and crafts. Young or old, there is something about it that  everyone seems to enjoy, whether it brings back nostalgic memories or creates a calming and relaxing environment, arts and crafts is a perfect activity to increase family bonding time. Creating marble art is a fun and easy project that can be made from materials already found in your home   To achieve the swirly marble pattern simply use old nail polish, water and tooth picks on a piece of paper. Choose your favourite colours and away you go! This activity is a great way of adding some colourful art to your homes without breaking the bank and is a perfect way for  kids to channel their inner Picasso. You can easily turn these masterpieces into homemade cards to showcase creativity, save money and share the love with a handmade gift.

      Build a Birdhouse

If you love attracting nature, especially little birds, then investing time to build a birdhouse to either hang from a tree branch or veranda is a DIY project that children will love. Whilst also having the benefit of attracting feathery friends to your home, building a birdhouse is a inexpensive way of adding a little enjoyment to your backyard, providing a constant source of entertainment while you sit and read a book or even do some gardening. With the ability to decorate and paint whatever colour you wish, your home will be the best bird attraction in the neighbourhood. Add a little bird seed in the tiny home and your new feathered friends will never want to leave.

      Construct a Treehouse

For a larger project that you want to spend more time on, you may want to consider constructing a cubby house which is one of the greatest DIY projects of all time. The great thing about building a cubbyhouse, is that you can make it as simple or as complex as you’d like and personalise it to make it feel extra special. Spend time in your backyard and experience some real family bonding to construct something that is guaranteed to create a lifetime of memories for you and your children and, of course, all of their friends.

      Painted Pots

The great thing about pots is that they can be used for so many different functions and there’s usually a few old ones hanging around the house somewhere. Whether your decorating indoor, outdoor or a bit of both, transforming your pots will have your creativity running free. From simple block colours to adding striples, zig zags and polka dots this creation will add a bit of flare to every corner of the home. Pair them with some herb or vegetable seedlings and you’ll have a miniature vegetable garden in no time. Stick a bow on the side and you’ve even created a homemade gift! Whatever your age, you’ll love getting outdoors and using your favourite coloured paints to spruce up the home.
