Space to Grow at Newenham in the Adelaide Hills
After more than two decades in a much-loved character home, Cassy and David knew it was time for a change.
Together with their children, Lola and Charlie, the family had spent 21 years living in a circa 1915 return verandah villa on Wellington Road in Mount Barker. While the home was full of charm and character, it was becoming increasingly difficult to meet the needs of modern family life.
“We loved the home, but it needed substantial upgrading, the traffic had increased on Wellington Road making it unsafe for the children, and we wanted an open-plan home for the family,” David explains.
The decision to move wasn’t about leaving the Adelaide Hills behind – quite the opposite.
David was born and raised in Mount Barker before later moving to nearby Nairne, while Cassy made the Hills home after the couple met. Staying in the region they loved was always part of the plan.
When they began searching for land, they quickly realised they didn’t want to compromise on space.
Having previously lived on a 1,125sqm allotment, the family considered acreage before deciding that a generous residential allotment would provide the right balance between lifestyle and practicality.
“We wanted a similar-sized allotment for the children to play and have space to entertain,” the couple says.
For Cassy and David, Newenham stood apart from the other options they had considered.
“We didn’t consider other estates as most of them have small allotments and the homes are very near to one another.”
The family had driven through Newenham on several occasions over the years, admiring the display homes and broader vision for the community. Everything changed when David spotted their future allotment on the Newenham masterplan.
After arranging a site inspection, they knew they had found something special.
“We immediately fell in love with the block, particularly its elevated location, the open park adjacent to our allotment and the views of Mount Barker Summit.”
Recommendations from several local real estate agents, who spoke positively about Newenham and its reputation within the region, further reinforced their decision.
Purchasing their allotment in March 2023, the family embarked on their very first custom home build with Belair Custom Homes.
Designed with family living at its core, their contemporary four-bedroom home features expansive open-plan living spaces, large double-glazed windows that capture the morning sun, soaring ceilings and natural materials throughout.

Now settled into their new home, Cassy and David say it is the sense of space, community and connection that makes Newenham special.
“The open spaces, the feeling of community and the large allotments are the three things we love most.”
Beyond Newenham, the family enjoys everything the Adelaide Hills lifestyle has to offer, from exploring Laratinga Wetlands, Mount Barker Summit and Totness Recreation Park, to discovering local cafés, wineries and pubs throughout the region.
“We enjoy the relaxed lifestyle, the locals and the proximity to the city if we need to head down the hill.”
