Nature and Community: A Fresh New Chapter at Newenham

For Remeny and Mike, building at Newenham wasn’t about discovering the Adelaide Hills – it was about continuing a lifestyle they had loved for decades, surrounded by nature and embraced by a welcoming community.

With four children, six grandchildren, and two much-loved dogs, Kevin and Tully, family has always been at the centre of their lives. After successful careers – Remeny as a New Car Sales Manager and Mike spending 45 years with The Advertiser – retirement presented the opportunity to build a home for the next chapter of their lives.

Having lived in the Adelaide Hills for many years, including 35 years in Littlehampton, the couple knew they wanted to remain in the Adelaide Hills region they had always loved.

“We love living in the Hills,” Remeny explains. “After Mike retired, we decided that we wanted a new home that was fresh and new.”

The search began close to home. Initially, they expected to remain in Littlehampton, but finding the right block of land proved difficult. While they explored several other developments throughout the Adelaide Hills, nothing felt quite right.

It wasn’t until they had selected a home design and were encouraged by their salesperson to explore Newenham that everything changed.

“When we first drove into Newenham, we knew straight away that this would be our new home,” says Remeny.

Purchased in June 2021, their allotment offered exactly what they had been searching for – a location close to everyday convenience of Mount Barker, while still enjoying the natural beauty and peacefulness that define Hills living.

“Newenham is close to Mount Barker Central and all the amenities that we require, but it also seems removed from the busy place that it is now.”

For the couple, it was the landscape that made the strongest first impression.

“The beautiful trees and the feeling of getting back to nature. This is what Hills living is about for us.”

Building their home also marked another milestone – their first custom home build.

They chose to build with Simmonds Homes after instantly connecting with one of the designs on display.

“When we walked into the house that we decided on, we knew instantly this was the one for us.”

Fortunately, construction was completed just before the widespread supply shortages and delays that impacted much of the building industry during the pandemic.

Today, their home provides the calm and comfort they had envisioned, with open-plan living spaces and expansive windows designed to capture the surrounding greenery.

“We chose Simmonds Homes because of the design; it is very calming and open. We have lots of glass so we can look out at the beautiful greenery.”

Now settled into life at Newenham, it is the sense of community that has become one of the things they value most.

“We love the serenity and people. Everyone looks out for one another, and we are very fortunate to have such lovely people around us.”

When they’re not spending time with family, Remeny and Mike enjoy exploring local garden centres throughout the Hills and catching up with friends and neighbours.

For them, the Adelaide Hills lifestyle is beautifully simple. “The Hills lifestyle for us is its beauty.”

And if they had to describe Newenham in just three words? “Beautiful, calming and friendly.”

After more than three decades in the Adelaide Hills, Remeny and Mike found exactly what they were looking for – a thoughtfully designed community where nature, connection and everyday convenience come together. Today, they’re enjoying retirement surrounded by the landscape they love, close to family, and in a neighbourhood that already feels like home.
