Preserving History and Natural Landscapes

The preservation and restoration of the existing historical buildings at Newenham is central to our masterplan. It’s a promise we have made to our community, its history, and the natural landscape. A key aspect of this promise is the restoration of the original Newenham homestead, for which Newenham is named.

Nestled in a beautiful position within Newenham is the historic homestead that boasts connections with several of South Australia’s most prominent and well-respected citizens

Lieutenant Colonel John Morphett Irwin purchased the property in 1933 and named it after his ancestor Charles Burton Newenham, once the Sheriff of South Australia. Lieutenant Colonel Irwin renovated the original cottage, transforming it into a delightful country homestead. He converted the surrounding land into one of South Australia’s pre-eminent scientifically managed farms.

We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be part of shaping the next chapter in Newenham’s story. But with this privilege comes the great responsibility of preserving and cherishing the existing assets, which includes a century-old pear orchard as well as the Newenham Homestead.

In addition to protecting these incredible assets, we’ve retained 98% of the existing native and European trees, and are planting thousands more. The stunning Western Flat Creek will be enhanced with a native vegetation corridor, wetlands and viewing platforms. This immersion in nature will enhance our residents’ sense of wellbeing as they wander through the trails, reserves and streets of Newenham.
