In a way, David Dymock has come full circle. After spending his childhood in the Adelaide Hills and working interstate and abroad for many years, he and partner Lauren have realised their dream of building a new home at Newenham.

The home that commercial analyst David and partner Lauren, who is a human resources officer in the disability sector, moved into in August 2018, has a distinct global vibe. After working in Newcastle, Sydney, and Paris, they returned to Adelaide and have finally settled in the Adelaide Hills at Newenham.

“We have two West Highland Terriers; Napoleon, who we bought while living in France seven years ago, and Ned, who’s three. We also have a rescue cat, Stella, who’s nine,” says Lauren.

The young couple had been looking around the Adelaide Hills for a place to build after living for a while in Bridgewater.

“We looked at quite a few developments in Mount Barker, as well as small land releases around Mylor and Woodside. Ultimately, we loved Newenham’s philosophy of retaining trees and the open natural spaces, building a real community, and we also loved the general ‘feel’ of the development,” enthused Lauren.

However, while the ‘openness’ and larger flat blocks at Newenham ultimately won them over, a family friend also recommended Newenham to David and Lauren as the philosophy closely aligned with their own.

“We’re (both) in our 30’s and looked at Newenham as a great place to raise a family. After living in quite a steep block in Bridgewater, it also offered us the opportunity to build on a relatively flat parcel of land,” David recalls.

The international flavour of David and Lauren’s Newenham journey continued with the couple opting to build a Californian bungalow-style house with a courtyard featuring a Japanese Maple tree and garden.

“This is our first house build,” said David. “We designed and incorporated a courtyard to bring some northern light into the kitchen and main living area. The courtyard can be viewed from windows at different heights where we can view the Japanese maple and garden. We really like being able to see our surroundings change with the changes in season.”

The couple’s new home also gives them a rural aspect out the front that epitomises the rustic charm of Newenham.

“The aspect out to the creek and linear park we have out the front of our property, the walking track to Mount Barker cafés, and the real country community feel that’s common amongst all our neighbours are just some of our favourite things about Newenham.”

Stamping their individuality on their new home was also important to David and Lauren, and their home design reflects their desire to spend quality time with family and friends.

“We love our large open plan kitchen living and dining room which flows into our alfresco and backyard. It’s a great space for entertaining family and friends. While still being cosy and warm in winter in front of our wood-burning fire,” Lauren says.

And while they have only been in their new home a little over 12 months, it seems one place has already become a firm favourite to spend quality time with each other.

“Our front piano/library room looks out over the old gum tree and the creek with a view of our courtyard through the other aspect: it’s probably our favourite place to wind down.”

Newenham also offers some exciting new community aspects with more in the pipeline…and both agree it can’t come soon enough.

“We are already enjoying the linear park and connectivity to Mount Barker. But we are greatly looking forward to the community farm and the shopping precinct! It will be really handy to be able to quickly grab any essentials nearby”.

Being ‘Hills’ people before the move to Newenham, David and Lauren find that they now have even easier access to their favourite eateries and are discovering new places to try as well.

“We really love the Blvd Café which is close enough to walk to for a Sunday brunch and makes some of the best coffee going around, along with Sazón in the main street of Mt Barker. Lot 100 is a favourite for some wine, gin, cider and beer tasting. And we are really spoilt for choice in the Hills with The Lane, Artwine and Ambleside some of our other favourites. We also love walking around the Laratinga Wetlands.

A rustic outlook, close proximity to Mt Barker, and a fantastic start to the next exciting phase of their life…no wonder David and Lauren are enjoying being part of the Newenham community.
