A passion for creating beautiful and wholesome foods from fresh produce while living in a similarly nourishing setting has led Italian bakery couple Maria and Mario to sell up in the city and purchase in the wellness-inspired Newenham residential estate on the outskirts of Mount Barker.

The couple, who run the Dolce Classico store and bakery atย Hectorville and have established an enviable reputation for their selection of handmade, organic Italian sweet cakes and almond breads โ€“ including a gluten-free line, call their Newenham block their very own โ€œpiece of paradiseโ€ and the perfect complement to their business.

โ€œWeโ€™ve always loved the the Adelaide Hills, its freshness and authenticity, the rolling countryside, the many trees and the crisp air,โ€ Mrs Deieso said.

โ€œSo when Newenham popped up while I was doing a bit of online research a few months back, I was immediately transfixed by its tranquility, beauty and idyllic rural setting.

โ€œAnd the more I read, the more its philosophy of wellness and the sense of community it embraces struck a chordโ€ฆand the more I thought, yes, this blends perfectly with what Mario and I do, where our passions lie โ€“ and it may even inspire us to make even better cakes and breads!

โ€œWe also think we have a particularly special block. Itโ€™s on a corner, with lots of old trees, a scenic outlook and enough room for me to potter about planting and growing a variety of fresh produce for our personal use.โ€

With the couple nearing retirement age but having no desire to slow down just yet, they are also thinking of bringing their Dolce Classico concept to Mount Barker once they settle at Newenham within the next few years.

The Deiesos, who have no formal training but are self-taught, drawing on their Italian heritage and the many cooking lessons passed down by Nonnas, parents and other family members, were also attracted by Newenhamโ€™s plans for an eight-hectare community garden within the development, as well as a ย community hub that will host, among others, regular artisan markets.

โ€œWeโ€™re sure to get involved with these, too, as markets already play a big role in our business. We are regular stall-holders at the Market Shed and are down to have a presence at the new Plant 4 market in Bowden when itโ€™s launched next month,โ€ Mrs Deieso added.

Maria andย Mario plan to start building their contemporary country home, set amid gentle landscaping, within the next 12 months and be ready to move into the Burke Urban development before the winter of 2018.

We welcome Maria and Mario and look forward to helping them settle in and enjoy everything Newenham offers over the coming years.
